Charm Pack Trinket Dish – Easy Sewing Pattern

A charm pack is a type of precut quilting fabric that comes cut in 5″ squares. I love buying these because you can collect tons of pretty quilting fabric designs without buying a large bundle of fabric. By collecting charm packs, I get a nice sampling of different fabrics to fill my stash.

Many people use charm packs to make quilts. In the past, I’ve used them to make everything from simple patchwork squares to star quilt blocks. However, I also love using charm packs to make accessories. They’re perfect for my keychain cube pouch pattern, which you can get for free on my Ko-Fi shop! But sometimes I like making something a little simpler.

Today I’m showing you how to make some cute little square pouches using charm packs. These are super quick to sew and they make great last-minute gifts. And they’re great if you want to make a charm pack pouch but don’t want to bother with zippers.

To make a charm pack trinket dish, you only need a few simple supplies:

  • Charm pack fabric or fabric cut into 5″ squares. You need four 5″ squares for each pouch.
  • Quilt batting cut into 4″ or 4.5″ squares. You need 2 pieces for each pouch.
  • Spray adhesive such as Odif 505 (unless you are using fusible batting).
  • Pins or quilting clips.
  • Matching thread.
  • Fabric scissors.
  • Quilting ruler.
  • Fabric chalk.
  • Iron & ironing board.

Trinket Dish Sewing Pattern

This project is so simple to make that you don’t need an official pattern. To make one of these trinket dishes, you simply need to cut your fabric to 5″ squares.

How to choose fabric for a trinket dish

You need four pieces of fabric for each trinket dish. I like using coordinating colors for the outer fabric and liner fabric. You can decide whether to use identical fabrics or simply pick fabrics that have the same color or pattern. These look really cute as a “scrappy” project if you don’t have matching fabrics.

How to Sew the Trinket Dish

If you’re not using charm packs, the first step in making this project is cutting your fabric to 5″ squares. You need four squares per trinket dish. Once you have your 5″ squares, follow along with these steps:

  1. Choose two pieces of fabric that you want to use for your outer fabric. Because these pouches are reversible, it doesn’t really matter what side is technically your outer fabric.
  2. Attach a 4″ to 4.5″ square of batting to the wrong side of your two outer fabric pieces. You can use fusible batting or use a spray adhesive such as Odif 505.
  3. Pair one piece of outer fabric with one piece of liner fabric. Lay these fabrics right-sides-together. Repeat with your remaining of outer and liner fabrics.
  4. Pin the layers together across one edge of the fabric. It doesn’t matter which edge unless you are using fabrics with a directional print (e.g. for fabric with a tree print, you want to sew along the edge that the tops of the trees point towards so they will be upright).
  5. Sew along the pinned edge. You can chain piece by sewing one seam and then continuing the seam onto the next fabrics without cutting the thread in the middle.
  6. Open the fabric out and press the seam away from the batting (the seam should be laying towards the fabric without batting).
  7. Lay one piece so that it’s right-side-up on the table. Then lay the other fabric face down on top of it. Make sure the liner is on top of the liner and the outer is on top of the outer.
  8. Ensure that the center seams are laying exactly on top of each other, then pin around the entire outside of the fabric sandwich.
  9. Now we are going to sew around the entire outside, leaving a small opening in the bottom of the liner so we can turn the dish inside out. You will start sewing on the bottom edge of the liner about 1.5″ from the outer edge. Sew all the way around, removing the pins as you get to them. Stop sewing when you are 1.5″ from the opposite edge of the liner where you started sewing. You should have an opening about 2″ long in the middle.
  10. Next, turn the bag right side out. Reach into the bag to poke the corners out so they look nice and pointed.
  11. Lastly, use an invisible ladder stitch to close the bottom of the bag. You can refer to the video for a visual of the ladder stitch.

I like to finish the bag by pressing the top to form a nice crisp edge. I think these look really cute with the top turned down by about an inch. This gives the dish a little more structure and it lets you enjoy both of your fabrics at the same time.

How to Use a Fabric Trinket Dish

One of the fun things about this project is that you can use these for so many different things! Here are a few things you can store in a fabric trinket dish:

  • Quilting clips or other small sewing notions.
  • Bobby pins or hair elastics.
  • Q-tips.
  • Paper clips.
  • Loose change.

The list could go on!
