Where to Buy Fabric Online (and actually get nice fabric)

With the closing of Joann’s stores, a lot of people are talking about where to find fabric now. I didn’t do much shopping at Joann’s to begin with, but it’s still sad news for so many people in the crafting community. Many people are stuck looking for different options, including buying fabric online.

Because of where I live, buying fabric online has been my best option for years, so I wanted to share a few places that I’ve had good experiences with. Buying online fabric is a bit scary because you can’t feel the fabric or see if it’s good quality. I was super hesitant before I started buying from online retailers, so I get it!

With that being said, I’ve found a few great options that I wanted to share with you. Here are some online fabric stores that I have personally shopped at and recommend. I sew clothes as well as quilts, so this list includes options for both.

There are TONS more options out there. These are just places where I have personal experience shopping.

Online Quilt Fabric Stores

Buying quilt fabric online is a little less intimidating than trying to find nice apparel fabric. Once you discover which brands you like, you always know what level of quality you’re going to get. The only tricky thing is trying to get an exact match on colors. Here are some places I like getting quilt fabric.

Green Fairy Quilts

If you’ve read any of my other blogs, you’ve probably noticed me mentioning Green Fairy Quilts in pretty much every post. I really do buy almost ALL of my quilt fabric from them — I’m not just saying that! The only time I buy from a different supplier is if I can’t find a very specific thing I’m looking for.

I like them because they’re a small family business and that’s something I like to support. They have a really good selection if you like precuts, and their regular prices and sale prices are often better than you find elsewhere.

I always stock up on mini charms!

You can also preorder future precuts and bundles. So if you have your eye on an upcoming designer fabric release and don’t want to miss out, you can preorder and they’ll ship it as soon as it arrives. I did this when the Purl collection by Sarah Watts for Ruby Star Society came out, and it was so fun getting the fat quarter bundle in the mail.

You can also get notions, thread, tools, and other essentials from Green Fairy Quilts. They tend to have pretty good deals on their tools, so definitely check them out.

Fat Quarter Shop

When I can’t find something at my go-to quilt supplier, I can usually get it at Fat Quarter Shop. Their selection is unmatched and they have pretty much every tool and notion you could ever want. I buy from them every so often when there’s a fabric bundle I can’t find anywhere else.

Their prices are standard with what other suppliers charge. They do have sales, but you generally won’t find things priced any more competitively than they have to be. They have all my favorite designers and usually have a great selection of Liberty Fabrics, which I’m obsessed with.

Missouri Star Quilt Company

This tends to be everyone’s go-to for fabric online. I’ve only bought from this place a few times when I needed certain tools, and while they’re great overall, I admittedly prefer the first two shops I mentioned.

Missouri Star has a really cute website and it’s fun to shop with them. I think the reason I don’t shop there more is that while they have a pretty wide selection, I can’t always find the designers I like there. My favorite brands are Art Gallery Fabrics and Ruby Star Society, and Missouri Star has some options, but it’s a lot more limited.

Connecting Threads

This is a brand that I first learned about when I found their fabric on Amazon. However, you can also buy directly from Connecting Threads on their website. They have a good selection of fabrics, with some being well-known designers and others being Connecting Threads exclusives designed just for the brand.

The Connecting Threads exclusives tend to be a more affordable option compared to designer fabric precuts. Some of the exclusive designs are a little more on the basic side, but sometimes that’s exactly what I’m looking for and I’ve been happy with all the fabric I’ve bought from them.

Quilt Fabric on Etsy

There are endless options on Etsy for buying quilt fabric. I’ve bought from quite a few places and honestly can’t remember all the specific shops. However, one that really stands out for me is Binded With Love. They have some of the fastest shipping I’ve ever experienced, and their bundles are truly lovely.

They have designer precuts, but they also have a variety of curated bundles that they create themselves. These are assembled from different designer collections to create unique bundles that are so pretty. You can also find yardage, with a lot of options from Art Gallery Fabrics and other designers.

I highly recommend shopping for curated fat quarter bundles on Etsy in general. The combinations people come up with are amazing, and I sometimes prefer them over bundles from specific collections!

Fabric on Amazon

Fabric on Amazon is kind of hit-or-miss, but I’ve found some nice options on there. When you’re looking for a budget-friendly fabric, this is a good option. I like the Tinyspool & Co. brand, and based on reviews, other people do too. You can also buy designer fabrics on Amazon, but compared to quilt suppliers, the prices tend to be a little higher. However, it’s a great option if you can’t find the fabric anywhere else.

Online Apparel Fabric Stores

If you sew your own clothes, finding good fabric online is a little more daunting. All of my favorite places to get apparel fabric online are Etsy stores, so I’ll list those below.

El Centenario Fabric

One of my favorite Etsy shops is El Centenario Fabric, which is based in California. They have really nice modal and bamboo knit fabrics and a huge selection of swimsuit prints. Recently, they’ve added more sweater fabrics, which I’m really happy about. I’ve had really fast shipping from them, and in my experience, the cuts of fabric tend to be on the generous side.

Stylish Fabric

Another favorite of mine is Stylish Fabric, also based in California. They have a massive (albeit overwhelming) selection to choose from if you’re looking for knits. I like buying sweater fabrics from them — specifically waffle knits and hacci knits.

Their prices are good and I like the quality. Sometimes the colors in the photos aren’t always super accurate, but this is really common when looking for fabric online so I can’t really fault them.

Felinus Fabrics

I’m a big fan of Felinus Fabrics, based out of Texas. They’re great for finding designer deadstock, so you can get some good deals on nice fabric. You can also find a variety of lace, trims, and other various things like that. It’s kind of a one-stop-shop for apparel accessories, which is a bit harder to find on Etsy.

Favorite Place for Lace: Mary Not Martha

I like using lace as an accent on my handmade clothes. I sometimes add it to the bottoms of my sleeve or use it instead of fabric to make cap sleeves for a short sleeve shirt. If you’re looking for a nice lace supplier, I recommend Mary Not Martha. They have really pretty options and very fast shipping in my experience.
